Finding Beauty in Print

Rokeya Sultana, a well known printmaker and a professor at the Institute of Fine Arts, Dhaka invited me to attend a Printmaking workshop, “In search of Beautiful Impressions”. The 7-day workshop started on June 18th and was organized by the art college and sponsored by Bengal Foundation. Two well known Printmakers, Nirmalendu Das and Pinaki Barua from Vishwa Bharati, Shantiniketan conducted the workshop. There was even a demonstration by Monirul Islam on the first day. Leading printmakers, students and artists from other streams attended. It’s been a hectic and fun week of interacting and learning. Being back at an Art College has been a treat. Selected prints of the participants will be displayed at a special exhibition to be held at the Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts from 2nd to 4th of June.

This Lithograph of mine “Being an Aunt” will be a part of the display.

And if you want to know a bit more about 4 printmaking techniques – etching, woodcut, lithography and screen print, check out the excellent step-by-step animated demo provided by MoMA.

I guess I would have to classify myself as a “self taught” artist not having an MFA or a BFA degree. I am a happy mix of self learning and a bit more formally from artists in workshops and institutions. And after over 15 years of figuring things out, I wouldn’t want it any other way! The journey of understanding and making art, for me, is a continuous learning process: Improving existing skills, learning new ones and most of all growing with the experience. Drawing and painting are an integral part of my life, something I am passionate about. The blogs, Maya & draw the line, document the road traveled thus far. People, their moods, interactions and emotions are an ongoing source of curiosity and interest. What I’m searching for is their inner personalities, their thoughts and there are stories I build around them as I work. I like portraying feelings of people when they are alone, lost in their thoughts, caught unawares. Those are the special moments that appeal to me most. I love to experiment and use a variety of medium ranging from oil, charcoal, printmaking, clay to the digital medium. Regardless, my focus remains fixed on the human form.

  2. This is my favorite of your prints by far. Wonderful mood, and great variation in the mark making. And I really think you’ve got a winning composition with great balance, and an ideal centre of interest.

When I first looked at it, it drew me in simply as a peaceful portrait, and then as I examined the aunt’s face the lines and values drew me down to the baby, and the reason for that peacefulness. Well done!
