The opportunity to participate in a Printmaking workshop fell into my lap earlier this year and I’m glad I didn’t let it pass me by. This workshop was organised by the Britto Arts Trust and was a little different in format from the earlier two.
There were two coordinators but there was no person conducting the workshop. Half the participants were practicing print makers, while the others were painters and sculptors being exposed to printmaking for the first time. The idea was to share ideas, methods and techniques to produce work based on the theme “Mechanical Fantasy”.
The subject took me out of my comfort zone and I spent the first 3 days just playing around with different ideas and making small sketches based on them. Of course we were busy with cleaning and polishing the zinc plates in preparation. Finally two you see below were selected.
Lines were etched and then the plate was prepared with a layer of rosen for the Aquatint process. Unlike the earlier two workshops, I transferred the drawings onto tracing paper, reversed it and used a sharp object to transfer it again to the prepared plate.
We held an Open Studio to display the work in early Feb and there is a plan to exhibit the work more formally in a gallery soon. A friend photographed some of the work on display.
“Jantra” (tool) is the result of an intense and satisfying printmaking workshop with Shahid Kabir held at UODA on May 30th/31st ( extended later for another 10 days ). Having completed the previous workshop just a week before gave me a headstart and it was exciting to take the learning a step further.
There is an exibition, Kormoshala Chapchitra Pradarshini, of the work produced at the workshop at Gallery Chitrak for a week, starting June 13th, 2008.
Update : July 17th, 2008 : I had been told during the exhibition that a buyer had booked my print but was waiting for a confirmation. Today I met the Gallery owner and he handed me the money from the sale. Thrilling I must admit. It is the first time that I have had money in hand from a sale. This brings the count of work sold to 3. Starting November this year, I shall begin a concerted effort to sell my work online.

I’ve been back from my exciting and terrific holiday for over a week now and given myself a 101 reasons for why I wasnt painting as yet.
2 nights ago, armed with all the equipment I’d collected, I decided to take a proof of the Linocut that I’d been working on a while ago. This is one of several that I pulled that night. It still doesnt have the darkness i’m looking for. I tried wetting the paper in my 4th attempt but as I hadnt blotted it well enough it turned out quite messy!
I cant think of what I can do to simplify it further so I’m leaving the linocut as is. One of the things that I am considering is to fix the eye on the right. All suggestions are very welcome. I’ll be taking a few more prints to try and get the print on darker.
Update: July 19, 2007: I like the linocut more than the prints! I think I’ll frame it instead 😀
Update: June 23, 2008 : Got another print using a press. A lot more ink on the print this time but still a bit messed up! Have to say though that I do love the embossed effect 😀
