mike guy

Decided to take the day off from the two things that I’m currently working on – singing practice and a painting as yet unnamed. Managed to finish a ball point sketch this morning and then found this ref while looking for something else to sketch.

He was the mike technician at the recent exhibition inauguration at Chitrak. There was something about him and I knew immediately that I’d like to paint him. This is a digital study and I hope to use it for a larger painting in oil/acrylics.

Painted using Art Rage and a wacom tablet.

  1. This will make an interesting painting. I’ve only zapped a couple of photos digitally to see the possibilities, and it’s a great way to see the values.

  2. Thank you Jenny. This isnt a digitally manipulated photograph though. I used my wacom tablet and art rage software to paint him. It gives me the freedom to use outlandish colours and play with different sized brushes etc. It is also much easier to step back from a mistake.

  3. Oops! You handle your tablet beautifully. My Wacom tablet is so old it no longer works with today’s computers, but I did enjoy the instant delete ability.

The few times I need a computer-generated drawing now, Bezier curves are used. I can whip those things into shape in no time.

  4. lol! i’d love to take some lessons from you on those bezier curves – dont even know what they can do. i only know that they exist in ps?

  5. forgot to add that art rage is a delightfully simple app to use. do check it out if you have the time. they have an almost fully functional free version.

  6. Ujwala – you are very proficient in using this digital aid. had me fooled -as I was revisiting the brushtrokes and found them energetic and definite. Wow! It all looks so fresh and uncontrived. G

  7. thank you, this software allows you to use either a brush, pencil, marker, roller, tube, crayon etc. and depending on your choice makes marks on the surface accordingly. i use it as i would in real life – first a rough drawing and then layers of paints. the key differences here are ability to experiment, recovery from mistakes, using multiple tools, eg. i can use crayons or felt pen over oil which i’d never dream of doing in real life, no clean up / smells. you bring your existing level of comfort when using this software because it is so easy to use and replicates what you would do if painting physically. it’s unbelievable and i love it!

  8. Hi Ujwala,
always looking at what you do and always amazed by your art.
It makes me feel like trying again digital art
Artrage is new to me! Seems easier to use than photoshop

  9. benedicte – you flatter me : ) i hope you will try art rage. there is no comaprision, art rage is way easier that ps / painter, very intuitive and i have no hesitation in recommending it.

  10. This is already looking *so* good. Love the choice of colors, the dramatic background -everything fits! I cannot wait to see the actual painting finished ^-^!

  11. silvia – I’m dreadfully scatty and I’m sure that when the time comes around there’ll be a completely different version on canvas. but that’s my life and i like it — every day is an adventure :D thank you for stopping by.
