Trying to create transparency
Posted on December 13, 2006 by Ujwala
Every once in a while, I try to draw something other than a face. Here’s tonights attempt, the brush holder on my desk. I have been shying away from attempting transparent objects and this time I decided to go for it. It certainly is a step in the right direction.
Added the real background using layers. It’s a bit too cluttered. Somewhere between the two would have applealed to me more.

I like the first one (sans background) quite a bit. I like them both, actually, but the simplicity of the one w/o the background is striking. It really forces the viewer to noticed the thick, stylized brush strokes.
Good stuff.
Thanks Tom. I’m thinking of trying out a few more variations. Moving the background line up to where it actually is and more color variations for the background. Aah the advantages of digital work
Speaking of which, your blog has gotten me interested in trying ArtRage. The results are fantastic.
I’m glad you liked it too
You could also check out Corel’s Painter - they have a 60 day trial period. I have 10 days left. The piece above was made with Painter. Of the two, I prefer Art Rage by far.
Are most of the pieces you publish here done with ArtRage? I’ve downloaded the free version and am quite intrigued by it. Seems a lot cheaper option for experimenting than “real” art supplies.
Hi Patricia. Most of the digital pieces have been made with Art Rage. I too find that it’s much easier to experiment with it. All the ones with impasto effects and the ones with several different color combinations are all in Art Rage. I think you’ll have super fun playing with it. I eventually went for the full version because of some additional capabilities that I had to have
I think the price at 20usd is fabulous especially when compared to 350 and 550usd for painter and ps.
Hey looks kinda cool, should practice more those still lifes… there is potential.
What is that sticking out is it a credit card?#
What is the medium by the way?
Thank you Angela and yes, that’s an elongated credit card
This is digital. I’ve used Corel Painter for this piece. My favourite is Art Rage but it hasnt been working since I made the last system update
I have only recently understood the value of painting still life.
