What I’m drawn to attempting are faces. Used a recent photograph that I’d taken of a friend and tried the tablet for this sketch. I’m finding it difficult to draw on the tablet and look at the screen. My hand-eye co-ordination needs improvement and I think doing blind contours is going to help me get there. Now I just need to add that to my already long list of things to do.

I’m learning to use a Wacom tablet too (and mine is also old–I bought it a few years ago and then never really made good use of it until now). I’ve had some trouble getting the pencil to look like pencil and haven’t yet tried faces but you’ve inspired me to give it a try. It’s nice to know someone else is out there working on these skills too.
What software are you trying out, Jana? My first attempt at scanning and coloring for Illustration Friday’s topic “Change” was quite a disaster but I’ve still put it up
. In case you’re interested, the ones I plan to try it out over the next couple of days are Digital Coloring I & II.
I’ve been scouring the net for ps tutorials ever since
Ujwala — thank you for your visit on my blog. You were talking about using the tablet and i think i am in a similar situation. I find it rather limiting when i try to render something pencil-like. Not only does it have the clear disadvantage of making you look at the screen, but it definitely does not imitate the contact that a regular pen would have on paper. I love my Wacom for various things — but not portraits. Illustrator C1 is pretty kickass though.
One more thing i forgot to mention: i really like the drawing you posted here!
